June is a C-IAYT (certified yoga therapist) and RYT500. She obtained her first 200 hr RYT certificate from Ashtanga Yoga Victoria in May, 2018, her second 200 hr RYT certificate from Solstice Yoga in San Agustinillo, Mexico in November, 2019, her 500 hr RYT certificate from Ajna Yoga in Victoria in October 2020 and her 800 hr Yoga Therapy Diploma from Ajna Yoga in Victoria in July, 2021.
She has practiced yoga (Iyengar, Ashtanga, Bikram, vinyasa and yin) for much of her life, beginning by practicing from a book as a teenager and then starting formal classes at age 30. While being blessed with excellent health herself, she has always been fascinated with the human body and how it works. She used to puzzle over questions such as why older people lost their mobility, why soccer players tended to have so many recurring knee injuries and why lower back pain was so common. After her kids left home, she travelled to attend anatomy and yoga seminars with world renowned teachers. She learned a lot about the human body but still didn’t have answers to her questions.
After doing her first yoga teacher training, she taught yoga only briefly as she soon realized she had no interest in teaching yoga flow or more traditional yoga classes. She had basically given up on the idea of teaching when she decided to go to Solstice Yoga in Mexico to learn about the Back Mitra prop from one of its co-creators. The only training that fit her schedule was a teacher training. She was entranced by the Back Mitra and its ability to heal and strengthen the spine. Upon her return home, she was drawn to the nearby Yoga Therapy program at Ajna where she was introduced to even more methods to improve posture and mobility in the body. She felt more at home with the focus of yoga therapy classes on including an educational component to classes, more dialogue between teachers and students, and helping students “start a conversation with their bodies” She finally had the theory and tools she was looking for and was inspired finally to teach and share her knowledge with others.
June continues to be first and foremost a student. She continues to study with other teachers – to integrate their personal experience of the body with her own. She is currently studying the Franklin Method.
